Can I Interest You in (different) Hanukkahs

December 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Can I interest you in Hanukkah?  This question was posed by John Stewart on the Colbert Christmas special.  Can I interest you in learning about the different Hanukkahs in Jewish History as we struggled to come to terms with both miracle and practical?  Is Hanukkah the sword…oil…dreidel…sacrifice?  Can we be interested in the celebration and meaning of Hanukkah?

    Dear Rabbi Jim,

I am writing to you as a former member of Beth David. I was confirmed at the synagogue in 1956 by Rabbi Markowitz! I am now 68 years old and live in San Rafael, CA. My fondest temple experiences reside at Beth David and always will. Although I have been away from Philadelphia for the greater part of my adult life, nothing evokes lovelier memories than being a part of a congregation that really cared. I remember that we were all terrified of Rabbi M. - he was a fire and brimstone orator who ran a tight ship but taught us magnificently. He was a true scholar. I looked forward to going to “Saturday Class” as a teenager and being involved in all of the Youth Group activities. It was such a special time. To be perfectly honest, I have never been able to get the feeling from any other temple of which I have been a member. There is a wonderful legacy and I just wanted to congratulate you on being the new rabbi. You are in a very special place!

With best wishes for a very Happy Chanukah, I am

    Sincerely,

Miriam Goldberg (nee Soifer) (My parents were Emanuel and Pauline Soifer)
