Thank you so much! I had the honor of doing the Torah blessings this morning for Rosh Hashanah and was terrified. I practiced with you on-line and got through without totally making a fool of myself.

Dear Rabbi Jim,

I am writing to you as a former member of Beth David. I was confirmed at the synagogue in 1956 by Rabbi Markowitz! I am now 68 years old and live in San Rafael, CA. My fondest temple experiences reside at Beth David and always will. Although I have been away from Philadelphia for the greater part of my adult life, nothing evokes lovelier memories than being a part of a congregation that really cared. I remember that we were all terrified of Rabbi M. - he was a fire and brimstone orator who ran a tight ship but taught us magnificently. He was a true scholar. I looked forward to going to "Saturday Class" as a teenager and being involved in all of the Youth Group activities. It was such a special time. To be perfectly honest, I have never been able to get the feeling from any other temple of which I have been a member. There is a wonderful legacy and I just wanted to congratulate you on being the new rabbi. You are in a very special place!

With best wishes for a very Happy Chanukah, I am

Sincerely,

Miriam Goldberg (nee Soifer)
(My parents were Emanuel and Pauline Soifer)

Deborah,

Thank you for responding. It has been a long time since I introduced you at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.

Yes, there is much more at your blog and I would hope people would find their way to your site. In a sermon brevity keeps attention and the issue is deeper, yet I thought your question wonderfully encapsulated the somewhat strange viewpoint and expectations of the Turkish government.

Thanks for providing a link to my blog regarding the Armenian genocide but you only linked to one of my postings on the topic. I have blogged a great deal about it and it's a bit more complicated than the one postings seems to suggest. Take a look at http://lipstadt.blogspot.com/search/label/Genocide%3A%20Armenian
